Children & Teenagers

Kids karate in Curitiba.

The Gairinkai dojo welcomes children, teenagers and young people. Training is adapted to each karateka's age and stage, always with a focus on discipline, respect and complete development — not competition.

Why karate is good for children

Traditional karate offers children something most sport activities can't combine: structure without rigidity. It's an environment with clear rules, recognizable hierarchy (sensei, sempai, kohai) and ritualized respect (rei), but where those rules don't exist to punish — they exist to organize community life and protect everyone.

In practice, children learn:

  • Self-control — technique only works if the body is available. This teaches waiting, pausing, executing at the right time.
  • Inner discipline — not mechanical obedience, but the awareness that what is practiced today shows up in the next class. It's a sense of causality that translates into responsibility at school and in daily life.
  • Respect for others — respect is the basis of all training. You bow before and after. You help the classmate who hasn't gotten the technique yet. You don't laugh at mistakes.
  • Confidence without arrogance — children discover they can do difficult things, without turning that into superiority over others.
  • Body awareness — posture, coordination, balance, laterality. Benefits that also show up at school.

Our approach is not sport-oriented

Many kids karate schools orient practice toward competition — medals, championships, rankings. That's not wrong, but it's not what Gairinkai does. Here, the focus is the karateka's complete formation: technique, ethics, respect and self-knowledge. If one day your child wants to compete, the dojo is affiliated with CBK and FPrK and that door exists — but it will never be pushed as the only path.

If you're looking for karate as a sport activity focused on tournaments, it's probably fair to say there are schools in Curitiba more aligned with that. If you're looking for karate as a path of formation, Gairinkai may be the right place.

Minimum age and environments

We welcome children from an age where they can already follow simple instructions and stay attentive in a group — generally around 7 years old, though it varies by child. If you're unsure, it's worth booking the trial class: one class makes it clear whether it's the right time for your child.

We also welcome neurodivergent children and teenagers. Training is adapted to individual needs, with patience and without exposure. The goal is always for karate to serve the person — not the other way around.

How to book the trial class

Message us on WhatsApp at (41) 99733-0589 with the child's age and any helpful context (prior experience, preferred schedule, anything you'd like us to know). The first class is on the dojo — come, see, feel the environment before deciding anything.
