What is Goju Ryu
Goju Ryu (剛柔流) literally means “hard-soft school”. The name brings together the two principles that define the style: go (剛), firmness, strength, structure; and ju (柔), softness, fluidity, adaptation. No Goju Ryu technique is resolved by just one of the two — the art lies precisely in moving between them as the situation demands.
Founded by Chojun Miyagi (1888–1953) in Okinawa, the style carries the direct heritage of traditional Okinawan karate. It is known for its emphasis on breathing (ibuki), rootedness (koshi) and closeness — many techniques are executed at short range, with grabs, throws and circular strikes that mark its identity.
The kata that sustain the style
Goju Ryu is taught through a small set of kata — each one a complete library of principles. Among them:
- Sanchin (三戦, “three battles”): the foundational kata. It trains breathing, posture, dynamic tension and mind-body connection. Every Goju Ryu practitioner returns to Sanchin throughout their entire life.
- Tensho (転掌, “rotating palms”): Sanchin's soft counterweight. It works the same rootedness but explores circular hand movements and the fluid transition between tension and relaxation.
- Saifa, Seienchin, Seisan, Sanseiru, Shisochin, Seipai, Kururunfa, Suparinpei: the eight classical kata that make up the style's full technical curriculum, each exploring distinct angles, distances and principles.
Gairinkai's lineage
Not every Goju Ryu school has a lineage close to the founder. At Gairinkai, the distance to Chojun Miyagi is three links:
- Chojun Miyagi (宮城) — founder of the style in Okinawa. He inspired the Mr. Miyagi character in Karate Kid.
- Seigo Tada Sensei (多田) — direct disciple of Chojun Miyagi. Founder of Seigokan, one of the most respected Goju Ryu organizations in Japan.
- Joetsu Narita Sensei (成田) — 5th Dan, Vice Director of Seigokan in Brazil. Trained in Rio de Janeiro under Shihan Leonardo Carion, and later, in Japan, under Shinsaku Murata and Seigo Tada.
This closeness is not a decorative badge — it shows in what is trained on the mat: kata without commercial simplifications, coherent applications (bunkai), and a tradition passed down orally across generations.
Why train Goju Ryu in Curitiba
Unlike styles with a strong sport and Olympic appeal, traditional Goju Ryu preserves the original martial intent — it is a karate for life, not for the podium. That makes it especially suited for those looking for karate as a path (do), not as a sport:
- Adults and seniors — Sanchin and Tensho respect the body at any age; the emphasis on breathing and rootedness is therapeutic.
- Beginners — the methodology starts simple: one stance, one breath, one technique at a time.
- Experienced practitioners of other styles — Goju Ryu offers a different reading of karate, with a focus on deep kata and coherent martial applications (bunkai).
The Gairinkai dojo is located Downtown Curitiba, at Rua Saldanha Marinho 76, room 03, with classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The first class is free — a real opportunity to try Goju Ryu before making any decision.
